The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni hits a home run. This article explains five reasons I think you will enjoy reading it.
- You will relate to the scenario.
Who can't relate to being part of a team? Whether it's the workplace, church, community, or family – everything revolves around teamwork. Moreover, all teams experience ups and downs. At some point, they face a predicament. I always say that a crisis brings out the best and worst in us. While some rise to the challenge, others resist.
- You will relate to the team members.
Similarly, every team has its own unique blend of personalities. Who hasn't encountered the know it all, the introvert, the sarcastic, or the manipulator? Maybe you were one of the previously mentioned. Likewise, most people tend to dislike attending meetings and view them as a waste of time.
- You will see a leader in action.
Reading about effective leadership is always refreshing. The Board brought in a savvy, secure, and professional leader who was prepared for the challenge. In fact, anticipating the CEO's moves kept me glued to the book. How would she manage the difficult personalities. Would she lose her cool?
Like a highly skilled surgeon in an operating room, she maintained a calm focus throughout the process. The leader's communication skills were exceptional especially the knack for storytelling. At pivotal junctions, she used them to explain concepts or make a point. Everyone got the message.
Furthermore, she led by example. She did not just talk the talk; she walked the walk. For example, respect ranked high on the list. The tough conversations were handled one-on-one. She did not berate her underlings. I refer to it as being firm but fair.
- You will gain invaluable insight.
You learn the five dysfunctions and discover how to tackle them. Then, at the end of the book you have an assessment to evaluate where your team stands along with instructions for interpreting the results. Another chapter provides an overview of each challenge. It's written in a straightforward manner increasing your understanding.
- You'll be entertained.
Besides gaining wisdom, you'll be entertained. I read this book in less than 2 days. It's a page turner that keeps you guessing. Will anyone be asked to leave the company? If so, who gets fired first? Who will decide to move on? Most important, will the team achieve its goal?
